MONARCHS REGISTER 74-58 WIN OVER FDU-FLORHAM
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's basketball team overcame a sluggish start but recovered to post a 74-58 victory over FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
FDU came out of the gates quickly and built a 15-6 lead with 10:50 remaining in the first half following a three-pointer by Jared Neff. The Devils would maintain a 25-15 advantage following a George Twill trey with 6:17 left in the half.
The Monarchs, however, would use a 16-0 run thanks to seven points by
Kofi Dwebeng and eventually took a 21-25 lead with 0:31 on the clock after a bucket down low from
Kevin Conroy. The Devils would cut the score to 31-27 at the break when Ryan McPherson canned a jumper with 0:01 left.
In the second half FDU would continue to remain in the game as the Monarchs held a 44-41 lead with 13:07 remaining after a three-pointer from McPherson. The Monarchs stretched the lead to 56-48 after a
Jamie Cousart jumper with 8:22 on the clock, then pushed the score to 64-51 after a pair of foul shots by
Chris Hacker with 4:12 remaining.
FDU would close to within 64-54 on a pair of foul shots by McPherson with 3:28 on the clock but King's closed out the game with a 10-4 surge to seal the victory.
King's received a dominant second-half performance from senior center
John Soboleski who scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the second half while adding 11 rebounds to register a double-double. Cousart followed with 14 points and five rebounds while Dwebeng added 14 points.
Ryan Nenstiel was the fourth Monarch to reach double-figures with 10 points.
McPherson led FDU with a game-high 24 points while Twill added 12 for the Devils. King's held a commanding 47-30 advantage in rebounding and committed just 11 turnovers compared to 25 for FDU.
The Monarchs will next travel to Center Valley for a critical Freedom Conference matchup with DeSales University in a rematch of the 2007 conference championship game.
