KING'S FIELD HOCKEY EARNS IMPORTANT 3-1 WIN OVER ALVERNIA
 
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College field hockey team picked up an important Freedom Conference victory on Homecoming Day as the Lady Monarchs defeated visiting Alvernia University 3-1 Saturday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's improved to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in Freedom Conference play. Alvernia, meanwhile, slipped to 8-8 and 2-3 in league games.

The game remained scoreless until Christina Glenn scored off a Jackie Snover assist with just 2:26 left in the first half. King's tacked on another goal only 1:23 later when Shawna Walp poked in a loose ball during a scramble in front of the Crusader net, giving the Lady Monarchs a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second stanza, the Lady Monarchs took a 3-0 lead when Heather Kozimor deflected in a feed from Glenn with 20:04 remaining in the contest. Alvernia would get on the board with just 0:43 left when Tonya Rutt scored off a penalty corner.

Alvernia held a 14-9 lead in shots as well as an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. King's goalie Erin McGinley made eight saves while Crusader keeper Audrey Hoffman tallied three stops.

The Lady Monarchs will return to action Tuesday at Wilkes with a 4:00 matchup at Artillery Park.
