MONARCHS PULL OUT VICTORY IN DOUBLE OT

WILKES-BARRE--- On a rain soaked field at McCarthy Stadium Brian McElroy played the part of the hero Saturday night when he scored the game winning goal with 4:27 left in the second overtime period. With the win, King's improves 12-1-4 overall and stand at 2-1-3 in conference. Alvernia falls to 7-8 and 4-2 on the season.

Alvernia struck early in the first half when forward Adam Lush scoring the only goal of the first half. Dominic Montone sent in a little chip pass that Lush turned into the goal, placing the ball in the top right corner at 5:32, giving Alvernia a 1-0 advantage going in to half time.

Dan Carle would score the equalizer at 57:03 on a rebounded shot taken by Mark Timko. Carle handled the ball outside the Alvernia box and took a blast and buried the ball into the top left corner, just out of reach of Crusader net minder Richard Kessler.

In a driving rain, the game could not be decided in regulation or in the first over time. Brian McElroy scored the game winner on a sliding kick and chipped the ball over Kessler for the win. The assist was credited to Joe Bender.

Monarch goaltender Tim Kelly was forced to make five saves on the night while the Crusaders Kessler made four. King's held a slim 9-8 margin in shooting and 6-5 on corner kicks.

The next King's men's soccer game will be this Tuesday, October 28 when they travel to Purchase, New York to face another conference opponent in Manhattanville College. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
