KING'S MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS WILKES TO REACH ECAC TITLE GAME
WILKES-BARRE – Cameron Audette scored a pair of goals and the King's College men's soccer team scored two goals in each half as the Monarchs posted a 4-0 victory over cross town rival Wilkes University in the semi-final round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Region Tournament Saturday at McCarthy Stadium in the Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win, King's improved to 15-1-5 on the year while advancing to the ECAC title game. Wilkes, meanwhile, ended its season at 11-8-3. The Monarchs, seeded first in the event, wil host Catholic University (14-6) in the championship game Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium. Catholic reached the title game with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over second-seeded Frostburg State in the first game of the day at McCarthy Stadium.
King's took s 1-0 lead just 11:33 into the game when Audette scored off a lead pass from Joe Bender. The Monarchs would stretch the lead to 2-0 with3:25 left in the opening stanza when Bender scored on a breakaway.
In the second half, King's would build a 3-0 lead when Audette scored following a perfect through ball up the middle off the foot of Bender with 28:13 remaining in the contest. After the Monarchs cleared the bench over the final six minutes of play, King's reserves tacked on the final goal when Sam Cressler struck net from the top of the box following s short pass from Grant Parsons.
King's held a 16-12 advantage in shots and also led 4-2 in corner kicks. Monarch goalie Tim Kelly made six saves on the day to register the shutout win. Wilkes starting goalie T.J. Baloga allowed three goals and made three saves while Kaleb Smith played the final 23 minutes and made one stop while allowing one score.
#3 Catholic Upsets #2 Frostburg State in Semifinal Match Up
WILKES-BARRE--- Matt Brady scored two goals en route to an overtime upset of second-seeded Frostburg State in the semi-finals of the ECAC Southern Region Tournament. The game could not be decided in the first over-time period and Brady scored the game-winner on a breakaway 1:41 into the second over-time. Kevin Duffy was credited with the assist.
With the win, Catholic improves to 14-6 and will play in the championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against top-seeded King's. Frostburg ends their season with a 14-5-1 overall record.
Brady scored the first goal of the game at just 4:42 into the first half. The Cardinals would get their next goal at 11:29 when Brian White headed the ball towards the goal and it bounced off the goaltenders arm and fell into the goal. Catholic would take a 2-0 lead into half time.
But Frostburg would rattle off two goals in the second half to tie the game. Jason King struck first for the Bobcats on a pass from Sean Jones and put the ball into the top right corner at 63:12. Jones would score the second Frostburg goal at 83:36 on a pass from Greg Bistany.
The championship game will be play at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium on Sunday.
