KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MISERICORDIA, 39-34

DALLAS -- The King's College and host Misericordia University women's basketball teams combined for just 83 points, but the visiting Lady Monarchs came out on the short end of a 39-34 loss Wednesday evening in the Anderson Center.
 
With the loss, King's slipped to 3-6 and 2-2 in the Freedom Conference. Misericordia, meanwhile, improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
 
In the first half the teams battled on even terms, standing deadlocked at 11-11 with 5:25 on the clock following a bucket by Kaitlyn Fiorino.

Misericordia then used a 6-0 spurt to take a 17-11 lead after a Vanesa Wright field goal with 4:03 left. King's cut the lead to 19-15 at 1:32 when Julianna Lynott and Paige Carlin each made one-of-two foul shots, but the Cougars headed to the locker room with a 23-16 halftime lead thanks to a basket by Lacey DeGaw with 0:07 on the clock.

In the second half both teams continued to struggle offensively, but the Lady Monarchs slowly cut into the Cougar lead and eventually took a 29-28 advantage with 11:27 to play after two foul shots from Kaitlyn Malshefski, and baskets from Kristen Baumes and Fiorino.

Misericordia regained a 34-32 lead, but King's tied the score on a pair of foul shots by Carlin with 1:45 remaining. The Cougars would recapture the lead with 0:46 left after a bucket by DeGraw and one-of-two foul shots by Vannessa Wright following a King's turnover. The Lady Monarchs had an opportunity to cut into the lead but Carlin missed the front end of a one-and-one with 0:36 on the clock to leave the score unchanged.

King's committed a foul with 0:20 left and Lyndsey Sykes canned both charity tosses to push the Cougar lead to 39-34. Kayla Dick then missed a three-pointer for the Lady Monarchs with 0:03 remaining and Courtney Sykes rebounded for Misericordia to end the game.

Fiorino was the only King's players to reach double-figures with 11 points and three rebounds. Malshefski followed with seven points and three rebounds while Carlin added five points and two boards. Lynott contributed eight rebounds while Krystina Durako pulled down six boards.

As a team, King's made just 11-of-49 shots from the field and only 3-of-19 three-point attempts. The Lady Monarchs also hurt themselves from the foul line, making just 9-of-18 attempts.

Misericordia was led  by DeGraw with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Wright chipped in with 10 points and three boards. The Cougars converted only 15-of-53 shots from the floor and were 9-of-14 from the foul line,

King's will be idle until it hosts the Lady Monarch Classic January 3-4 in Scandlon Gymnsasium.
