LADY MONARCH CAGERS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 24 VERSUS WILKES
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College women's basketball team placed five players in double-figure scoring as the Lady Monarchs posted a 71-58 victory in the 2008-09 Freedom Conference opener over visiting Wilkes University Wednesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 2-3 on the year while extending its winning streak over Wilkes to 23 games. The Lady Colonels, meanwhile, slipped to 3-3. Wilkes has gone 11 years without posting a victory over King's. The Lady Colonel triumph came by virtue of a 63-57 triumph on February 11, 1997.
King's built a 20-point first-half lead until Wilkes went on a 12-0 run to claw back to within 38-28 at the break.
In the second half, King's quickly rebuilt the lead back to 21 points with 15:01 remaining. Wilkes would come no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Kaitlyn Malshefski topped King's with 16 points and six rebounds while Kaitlyn Fiorino followed with 15 points and five boards. Kristen Baumes contributed 13 points with three rebounds while Abby Mallow tallied 12 points and two steals. Julianna Lynott posted with 10 points and five rebounds before fouling out with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest. Katie Miller chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds.
Chelsey Gosse led Wilkes with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Allison Horn added 14 points and three rebounds.
King's will return to action.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ
