KING'S VOLLEYBALL MARKS OPENING OF 2008 SEASON

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's volleyball team opened their season on a high note by going 2-0 after the first day of the King's Women's Volleyball Tournament.

King's defeated Mt. St. Mary 3-1 by scores of 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 25-13. The Lady Monarchs then bested Misericordia 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 26-25, 25-15. King's was paced on the day by Kaitlyn Malshefski with 25 kills while Kat Clerici added 21 kills and five solo blocks. Danielle Belfanti registered 38 digs while Samantha Garrigues contributed 10 kills and 38 assists. Kelly Greenway dished out 28 assists while Katie Doss chipped in with 18 kills.
Wilkes University split their two matches, dropping the first contest to Misericordia 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-14, 10-15). In Wilkes' second game against Marywood, the Lady Colonels won by a 3-1 count (25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16). Senior Marissa Harrison had a combined 22 kills and 27 digs. Defensive specialists Allison Kelleher tallied 37 digs with six service aces. Junior Julie Page rang up 16 kills and freshman outside hitter Kate McGurk tallied 13 kills and 36 digs. Setter LeeAnn Searfoss combined for 45 assists.

Misericordia also finished 1-1 with its win over Wilkes and subsequent loss to King's. Amy Porambo finished the day with71 digs while Michelle DiCicco added 22kills. Jesse Karger dished out 29 assists while Rachel Hullinger chipped in with 12 digs and seven kills.

Day two of the tournament is set for Saturday, August 30 at 10:00am.
