KING'S COLLEGE SOCCER WINS IN DRAMATIC FASHION
WILKES-BARRE, PA --
Billy Elliott scored the game winning goal with just five seconds left on the clock as King's downed the visiting Hawks of SUNY New-Paltz 5-4. With the win, King's improves to 7-0.
Elliott's goal came in the final frantic moments of the game as the Monarchs were taking their second consecutive corner kick. Symons lofted the ball to the middle of the net where Elliott sent a header into the right corner to clinch the match. The game winner offset a furious comeback effort by the Hawks, who rallied from a 3-0 deficit at the half to tie the score at 4-4 with just under a minute left in regulation.
King's marked their first goal in the 28th minute when
Cameron Audette was fouled in the penalty box. Audette lined up his kick and put it to the right of the diving Hawks goalie, Patrick Carlucci. The Monarchs would score again twice with less than five minutes in the half. SUNY New-Paltz would foul Audette in the box for a second time.
Ryan Symons took the shot and tucked it in the top right corner. The final goal of the half came with just over a minute left. Joe Bender flicked the ball in on a great corner service from
Kevin Moulton.
The second half proved to be the most dramatic 45 minutes of soccer King's has played yet this year. SUNY New-Paltz came out firing, scoring their first goal of the game just two minutes in to the new half. Tommy Garafalo finished a rebound taken by Lucas Natel. Nearly thirty minutes later, the Hawks made it more interesting by scoring again to make the score 3-2.
King's
Dan Horn struck back three minutes later with a header that slipped through the hands of Hawks goaltender Patrick Carlucci. Horn was assisted by a header pass from Billy Elliot, bringing the score to 4-2.
New-Paltz would strike twice in the waning minutes of the game. James Altadonna would score unassisted on a ball that just slipped past Monarch net minder
Tim Kelly with 86:40 left. The equalizer was scored by Joe Emberger, when he converted on a great pass from Garafolo. The goal came at 89:01 on the clock.
