MONARCH WRESTLING DROPS TWO ON THE ROAD
HOBOKEN, NJ --- In a tri-meet held at Stevens Institute of Technology, the King's College wrestling team dropped two matches. The Monarchs fell to Stevens Tech 25-23 before dropping a 43-9 decision to third-ranked Delaware Valley.
With the losses, King's now slips to 7-9 overall on the year.
Against Stevens, the Monarchs started off strong in the 125-pound class, with Michael Tabasco picking up an 18-3 tech fall over Frank Masselli, putting King's up 5-0. But the Ducks would pick up six points from 133 pounder Mark Bisitis when he pinned Anthony Dietrick at 2:40, allowing Stevens to go take a 6-5 lead.
In the 141-pound class, King's was able to earn a seven-point swing when the Duck's Pat Conrad was disqualified, giving Tony Miele and the Monarchs six points, and cost Stevens Tech a team point, putting King's ahead 11-5. Frankie Davis was able to give King's back-to-back victories with a 3-2 decision over Tony Mancini and moving the Monarchs up 14-5.
But the Ducks were able to string together three straight victories, including two pins and one technical fall. Leo Dormann pinned Taylor Green in 6:55, and was followed up at 165 when Steven Tech's Joe Favia earned a18-3 technical fall over Jerry Robbins. The 174-pound class saw Ryan Dormann pinning Mike Reilly in 2:17. The three wins allowed the Ducks to earn 17 team points, putting them on top 22-14.
King's was able to stage a comeback, starting with184-pounder Zach Wilkinson who defeated Jordan Chacon 8-5 and got the Monarchs to within five points at 22-17. The Monarchs then took the lead in the 197-pound class when Zach Martinez pinned Ernie Guimano in 2:55. The heavyweight bout proved to be the deciding factor as Steven's James Roarty gained a 3-2 victory over King's Chris Rash, sealing a 25-23 Steven's win.
In the next match versus Delaware Valley, King's found themselves down early after being pinned in their first two bouts, followed by two more decisions. Green was able to put the Monarchs on the board in a 2-1 victory over Robbie Hickman.
The big winner for King's was Wilkinson at 184, who pinned 2008 NCAA Division III national runner-up Michael Wilcox in 3:45. Wilcox is currently ranked second in the country in the Brute-Adidas National Poll.
The Monarchs will be back in action Monday when they travel to Williamsport to face Lycoming College. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
