King's Wrestlers Split Pair on Opening Day of National Duals

WILLIAMSPORT – The King's College wrestling team dropped its opening match, but rebounded to win  two straight contests on the first day of the Bud Whitehill National Duals Friday at Lycoming College, Williamsport.

In its first match, the Monarchs fell 28-18 decision to 17th ranked and fourth seeded Cortland State.  King's then bounced back to gain a 34-6 triumph over Baldwin-Wallace. The Monarchs then bested Oswego State 23-17 to finish the opening day with a 2-1 mark.

Against Cortland, the Monarchs fell behind 18-0 after four matches, but Taylor Green picked up King's first win at 157-pounds with a 6-4 decision. After a loss at 165, the Monarchs won the next three matches. Mike Reilly earned a 7-3 decision at 174 while Zach Wilkinson posted a pin at 184. King's Kevin Docherty was then awarded a forfeit at 197 to cut the Cortland lead to 22-18.  In the final match and an opportunity to pull off a stunning comeback, but King's heavyweight Chris Rash fell by fall in 4:10 to Joe Murphy.

Against Baldwin Wallace, King's won eight of the 10 matches
 , building an early 18-3 lead after four bouts. Mike Tabasco picked up a forfeit at 125 before Tony Miele (6-9) and Franke Davis (6-4) gained decisions at 141 and 149 respectively. Green then scored a first-period pin to aid the early onslaught.

King's would sweep the final four matches as Reilly and Wilkinson registered decisions at 174 and 184 before Kevin Docherty scored a major decision at 197. Rash would pick up a forfeit at heavyweight to round out the scoring.

IN the final match of the day against Oswego, Anthony Dietrick gave King's a 4-3 lead after a technical fall victory at 133.  After Oswego earned decisions at 141 and 149, King's woul din the next three matches as Green and Jerry Robbins picked up decisions at 157 and 165, followed by a technical fall triumph by Reilly at 174 and a pin from Wilkinson at 184 to give the Monarchs a 23-10 lead. Oswego would win the final two bouts to secure the final score.

The Monarchs will continue competition Saturday when the Monachs face host Lycoming at 9:00 a.m.
