KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO BABSON, 74-66
HOBOKEN, NJ -- The King's College men's basketball team fell to 0-3 on the year as the Monarchs dropped a 74-66 verdict to Babson College on the final day of the Steven's Invitational Tournament in Hoboken, NJ.
In the first half the teams were tied at 12-12 with 14:25 remaining when Babson broke the game open with a 10-0 run. Sheldon Ladson ignited the surge by the Beavers with eight points, including back-to-back three-pointers to give Babson a 22-12 lead with 11:49 left in the first half.
Babson built leads of 12 points on three occassions the last coming at 2:42 on a layup by Tom Lavin to push the score to 37-25. King's cut the lead to 39-30 on a Kevin Conroy bucket at 1:15, but the Beavers used a Marcus Edwards basket with 0:17 left in the opening stanza. to take a 41-30 lead at the break.
In the second half King's chipped away, using a 12-4 run to close to within 45-42 following a bucket by Matt Fiorino and a pair of foul shots from Mike Wagner with 14:41 left in the second half.
Babson would stretch the lead back to seven points, at 5-48 on a three-pointer by Marcus McDermott but the Monarchs countered with a basket by Jim Schule and one-of-two foul shots from Nick Reisg to close to within 55-53 with 9:42 left to play.
King's eventually tied the score at 59-59 on a Wagner three-pointer with 4:48 on the clock but the Beavers went on a 8-1 surge to build a 67-60 advantage with 1:10 to go on a pair of foul shots by Dan Mauro. After a bucket down low by Conroy trimmed the lead to 69-64 with 0:30 remaining the Monarchs were forced to foul and the Beavers made five of six charity tosses, sandwiched around a layup to bring the final score to 76-64.
Conroy led King's with 23 points and seven rebounds while Wagner added 10 points. Schule contributed eight points while Kyle Stackhouse posted six points and four assists. Wil Acevedo also chipped in with six points.
Marcus Edwards led Babson with 30 points while McDermott added 13.
The Monarchs return to action Tuesday in Reading with a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Albright College.
