Lady Monarchs Open Freedom Schedule with 74-48 Win Over Eastern

KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALLDOWNS EASTERN IN FREEDOM OPENER
 
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's basketball team put together its finest performance of the season as the Lady Monarchs opened the 2009-10 Freedom Conference schedule with a 74-48 victory over Eastern University Wednesday in Scandlon Gym.
 
With the victory, King's improved to 3-3 overall while Eastern slipped to 3-2.
 
King's opened the game with a 10-1 at the 14:11 mark, keyed by a bucket by Katlin Michaels and consecutive three-pointers from Megan Rigous and Brittany Muscatell. After Eastern cut the lead to 14-8 on a bucket by Bekah Roland with 11:05 on the clock, the Lady Monarchs used three straight points from Rigous, a driving lay-up by Michaels, and a lay-up and subsequent three-pointer from Kayla Dick to build a 24-12 advantage with 7:48 left in the half. Eastern would whittle lead down to 30-23 following a Whitney McCloud jumper with 3:18 on the clock, but King's countered with a 13-5 surge, powered by a three-pointer by Lindsay Atchison and two-long range bombs from Celia Rader to give the Lady Monarchs a 43-28 halftime lead.
 
King's opened the second stanza with a bucket by Muscatell and three points from Michaels to stretch the lead to 49-28 with 17:14 left to play. After Eastern made one-of-two foul shots, the Lady Monarchs used a decisive 11-2 run to put the game away as a Nina Magan three-pointer put the Lady Monarchs on top 60-31 with 9:30 remaining. 

The Lady Monarchs were led by Rader with 16 points off the bench while Michaels added 14 points three rebounds and two assists. Rigous tallied eight points and six boards while Muscatell finished with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists.
 
Lizzie Wilson led Eastern with eight points and five rebounds. 

The Lady Monarchs will next face Manhattanville College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Purchase, NY.
