KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MANHATTANVILLE
PURCHASE, NY – Manhattanville College built a 32-27 halftime score and maintained its advantage throught the second half to post a 64-52 victory over the King's College women's basketball team Saturday in Purchase, NY.
With the win Manhattanville improved to a 4-3 overall and 2-0 conference record while King's dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-1.
The two teams kept it close in the first half of play, but the Valiants made a late surge when Carol Ortiz scored a layup and was fouled on the play, converting the traditional three-point play to push the score to 30-27 with 2:39 left. Ortiz would score again with 1:03 to give the Valiants the 32-27 halftime lead.
The Lady Monarchs would cut the lead to 32-29 on a basket by Paige Carlin at 19:37 of the second half. The Valiants anwered with baskets by Courtney Turner, Simona Gordon and Nina Johnson to extend the lead to 39-30.
King's trimmed the score to 39-34 after a three-pointer by Katlin Michaels with 14:58 to play.
Manattanville, however, put the game away with a late assault, building a 20 point lead following a Carey Hickey three-pointer with 3:39 to play. King's attempted to fight back and cut the lead to 12-points but would draw no closer.
Michaels led King's in scoring with 14 points and six boards. Abby Malloy and Lindsay Atchison followed with eight points each while Paige Carlin tallied seven points and two assists. Kayla Dick chipped in with five points to round out the scoring for the Lady Monarchs.
The Valiants had four players in double-digits with Ortiz leading the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Carey Hickey followed with 14 points and six assists while Turner had 12 points, four assists and two blocks. Gordon finished the double-digit scoring with 10 points and three assists.
The Lady Monarchs will next face Rutgers-Camden University Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Camden, NJ.
