KING'S BASEBALL TEAM OPENS SEASON WITH SPLIT AT SHENANDOAH

WINCHESTER, VA -- The King's College opened the 2009 season on Sunday with a doubleheader split against host Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va.

King's won the first game 8-7 before Shenandoah captured the nightcap by a 4-2 margin.

In the opener, the teams were deadlocked in a 6-6 tie in the sixth inning when Matt Unger drew a leadoff walk and later moved to second base on a passed ball. After an infield out advanced Unger to third base, Sean Rooney also reached base on a walk, to give the Monarchs runners at first and third with two outs. Pat Harsch would then come through with a single to left field to score Unger with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Harsch led King's with a 2-for-3 showing and three RBI, including a two-run double in the fourth. Brian Mikus was 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs while Eric Matula went 2-for-3 with one run and a RBI. Gracjan Kraszewski added a single and two RBI.  Ryan Derry picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Dan Jenkins. Derry pitched three and two-third innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two batters.

In the second game King's took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Mikus and Harsch singled and later score on a two-run single by Kraszewski. Shenandoah, however, would plate four runs in the sixth inning on a pair of two-run doubles from Scott Lambert and Jon Holcomb.

Jon Venarchick led King's with a 3-for-4 effort while Kraszewski added two hits to pace the Monarchs' nine-hit attack. Rob Bergman, and Rob Fravel also added singles for the Monarchs. Eric Matula took the pitching loss for King's, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four batters in five and two-thirds innings.
