KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ADVANCES TO FREEDOM CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS WITH 59-50 WIN OVER MISERICORDIA

DALLAS – The King's College women's basketball team overcame an 11-point first-half deficit with a big second half as the Lady Monarchs posted a 59-50 victory over host Misericordia University in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Tournament Monday in the Anderson Center.

With the win, fifth-seeded King's improved to 11-15 overall while fourth-seeded Misericordia ended its season with a 13-13 mark. The victory propels King's into the Freedom Conference semi-finals where the Lady Monarchs will travel to Center Valley to face top-seeded DeSales University Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Billera Hall.

King's started the game out poorly as the Lady Monarchs fell behind 10-0 after five minutes of play. Vanessa Wright opened the game with a three-pointer for the Cougars before Lacey DeGraw followed with a bucket and foul shot for a 5-0 Misericordia advantage. Lindsey Sykes and Wright then hit back-to-back jumpers to put the Cougars ahead 10-0 with 15:00 left in the opening stanza.

King's would remain scoreless until Jessica Paettie buried a three-pointer with 10:37 remaining in the half. The Cougars would counter with a three-pointer from Sykes to take a 13-3 lead and the teams traded baskets on the next three possessions as Misericordia held a 17-6 lead with 7:27 left in the half.

The Lady Monarchs finally mounted an attack when Kaitlyn Fiorino drained consecutive three-pointers to cut the lead to 17-12 at the 6:14 mark. After a Cougar bucket, Paige Carlin made one-of-two foul shots and Brittany Muscatell converted a driving layup to pull the Lady Monarchs to within 18-15 with 3:15 on the clock.

Courtney Sykes, however, canned a big three-pointer for the Cougars to push the lead to 21-15 but Fiorino scored for King's with 0:26 left to cut the lead to 21-17. Misericordia came through with another big bucket when Wright made good on a jumper from the left wing as time expired to give the Cougars a 23-17 half-time lead.

In the second half Fiorino gave the Lady Monarchs an immediate lift when she hit a three-pointer right out of the gates. Paettie followed with another trey on the next possession while Kaitlyn Malshefski scored on a layup to give King's its first lead of the day at 25-23 with 17:47 to play. Fiorino then followed with another three-pointer at 17:28 to cap a 11-0 run to give the Lady Monarchs a 28-23 lead.

After the Cougars cut the lead to 31-29 on a Wright basket, King's used a 11-6 spurt, keyed by three-pointers from Malshefski and Paettie, to build a 42-35 lead with 8:48 to play. King's would eventually stretch the advantage to 55-43 on a pair of free throws by Krystina Durako with 3:04 on the clock.

The Cougars cut the deficit to 55-50 on a bucket by Jesse Robinson with 1:15 to go, but Muscatell sealed the win with four straight foul shots to push the King's lead to 59-50 with 0:27 on the clock.

After scoring just 17 points in the first half, King's outscored Misericordia 42-27 over the game's final 20 minutes of play. Six of the Lady Monarchs' nine three-pointers also came in the second half, helping King's overcome a 37-27 rebounding disadvantage  in the game.  The Lady Monarchs, who had eight turnovers in the first half, were much better with the basketball in the second half, committing just two turnovers.

Fiorino led King's with 18 points, including four three-pointers while Paettie scored 12 points off the bench, including three treys. Muscatell netted nine points with five assists while Malshefski and Durako tallied eight points each. Paige Carlin chipped  inwith three steals on the defensive end of the court.
