KING'S WOMEN DOWN MISERICORDIA ON PAETTIE THREE-POINTER WITH 0:09 LEFT

WILKES-BARRE – Jessica Paettie drained a clutch three-pointer with 0:09 remaining as the King's College women's basketball team posted a gritty 45-44 victory over visiting Misericordia University Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved 8-12 overall and 6-5 in Freedom Conference play. The Cougars, meanwhile, slipped to 9-10 and 5-6 in league play.

King's would build a 24-19 lead at the half, but went stone cold following the break. The Lady Monarchs went without a point for the first 9:07 of the second half, allowing the Cougars to capitalize with a 12-0 surge to take a 31-24 lead. Paettie would finally get King's on the board with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 31-27 with 10:53 to play. Misericordia would extend the lead to eight points when a Lindsey Sykes bucket with 9:24 on the clock upped the score to35-27.

King's would slowly chip away and tied the score at 42-42 following a short jumper from Sarah O'Doherty and another three-pointer by Paettie with 3:01 left. Misericordia took a 44-42 lead after an inside basket from Lacey DeGraw with 2:35 remaining. Neither team would score the rest of the way until King's called a timeout with 0:23 to play following a Cougar miss. From there, Paettie made good on what proved to be the winning basket from behind the three-point line to put the Lady Monarchs ahead 45-44 with 0:09 to play. The Cougars had one last chance but Jesse Robinson's off-balancing driving attempt fell well off the mark as King's pulled out the victory.

Paettie came off the bench to score all nine of her points from long-range. Kaitlyn Malshefski led King's with 10 points while Kaitlyn Fiorino followed with seven points and five rebounds. Fiorino hit on two three-pointers during the game to tie Jenna Palumbo's career record of 242 treys from 2005-08. O'Doherty contributed six points while Paige Carlin chipped in with five points and six assists.

Misericordia was led by DeGraw with 19 points and five rebounds while Robinson added 14 points and six boards.

King's will now travel to face Alvernia University Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Reading.
