KING'S BASEBALL FALLS TO ALVERNIA, VENARCHICK STANDS AT 198 HITS

READING -- The King's College baseball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end as the Monarchs dropped a 8-3 decision to host Alvernia College in a Freedom Conference matchup Friday in Reading.

With the loss, King's slipped to 14-6 overall and 3-1 in Freedom Conference play while Alvernia improved to 14-7 overall and 1-1 in league games. The Monarchs had defeated Alvernia 6-2 just three days earlier as the teams concluded their season series deadlocked with one win each.

The Crusaders, ranked 28th nationally in Division III, trailed King's 2-1 in the early going but scored six runs in the fourth inning and the Monarchs were never able to recover.

Jon Venarchick continued his solid hitting, going 2-for-5 on the day while posting the 197th and 198th hits of his career. The senior standout is looking to become the first player in Monarch baseball history to reach the 200-hit plateau in his career.  Gracjan Kraszewski was 3-for-5, including a solo home run, while Matt Unger was 2-for-5 on the day.

King's starter Joe Jenkins was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs in three and one-third innings, walking five batters while striking out one hitter.

Venarchick will have the opportunity to reach the 200-hit milestone on Saturday when King's hosts Delaware Valley College in a 12:00 noon doubleheader at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
