KING'S TENNIS FALLS TO WILKES 7-2
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University tennis team clinched the second seed for the upcoming Freedom Conference playoffs as the Colonels posted a 7-2 victory over host King's College Saturday at Kirby Park.
With the win, Wilkes improved to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in Freedom Conference play. King's, meanwhile, settles for the third seed in the Freedom tourney after slipping to 10-6 and 5-2 in league games. The teams will meet in the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament next Saturday at Wilkes at a time to be announced.
Wilkes took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. After the Monarchs' number-one team team of Jonathan Hand and Povl Schmidt defeated Evan Katz and Jon Rohrbach 8-5, the Colonels received victories at second and third doubles. .Kyle Ungvarsky and Chris Cozzillio downed King's Blake Bonser and David Kaluzavich 8-1, while Jeremy Nolt and Wes McCollum gained a 8-0 triumph over Tim Carroll and Jonathan Ferrie.
Wilkes then wrapped up the match by capturing five of the six singles bouts. Bonser posted the lone individual win for the Monarchs with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Katz. However, Nolt, McCollum, Ungvarsky, Cozzillio, and Rohrback all registered singles wins to sew up the match for the Colonels.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday with a 1:0 p.m. matchup at Arcadia University.
