King's, Wilkes Win First-Round Matchups at Wilkes-Barre Challenge

KING'S, WILKES POST FIRST-ROUND VICTORIES AT WILKES-BARRE CHALLENGE

 

WILKES-BARRE – The host King's College men's basketball team exploded for a 24 point lead after just 10 minutes of play as the Monarchs posted a 100-64 victory over John Jay College in the opening round of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.  Wilkes upset 23rd ranked Carthage College 71-62 in the other opening round contest.

King's came flying out of the gates and utilized deadly outside shooting to jump on John Jay in the early going. The Monarchs raced out to an 18-4 lead just 5:30 into the contest following buckets from Dan Maguschak and Mike McCready. After the Bloodhounds scored the next four points to cut the lead to 18-8, King's went on a 14-0 run, keyed by a trio of three-pointers from Matt Fiorino and another from Nick Reisig to build a 32-8 advantage with 1-:24 left in the first half.   The Bloodhounds fought back to within 42-25 on a bucket by Joseph Padell at 4:08, but a Maguschak jumper built the lead back to 19 points at 44-25 with 3:09 on the clock.  From there the Bloodhounds ended the half on a 7-0 run to cut the Monarch lead to 44-32 at the break.

In the second stanza, a pair of foul shots from Vaugh Mason drew the Bloodhounds to within 44-34, but King's quickly reestablished itself  on baskets by Kevin Conroy and Kyle Stackhouse to stretch the lead to 48-34. After a John Jay basket, King's would go on a 11-2 rin to build a 59-36 lead with 15:08 remaining following a Wagner basket and two foul shots from Stackhouse. 

 

The Monarchs continued to dominate play and eventually built  a 89-60 lead on another Fiorino three-pointer with 5:07 to play. King's later posted its biggest lead of the contest when  Jonathan Gimore scored off his own offensive rebound and Wil Acevedo made good on a driving lay-up to push the lead to 37 points at 99-62 with 1:04 to play. King's would hit the 100-point plateau with 0:23 left when Eric Brown made the second of two foul shots.

King's placed five players in double-figures scoring and placed 13 players in the scoring column.  Fiorino tallied a career-high 17 points with four three-pointers. Conroy followed with 14 points and six rebounds while Stackhouse and Jim Schule added 13 points each. Wagner contributed with 11 points while Maguschak and McCready chipped in with eight and seven points respectively.

With the win King's improved to 3-7 while John Jay Fell to 1-10.

 

King's will next face Carthage Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym while John Jay meets Wilkes at 3:00 p.m.

WILKES RALLIES PAST CARTHAGE 72-61 IN WILKES-BARRE CHALLENGE OPENER

 

WILKES-BARRE –  The Wilkes University men's basketball team rallied from a 36-31 halt-time deficit, outscoring 23rd ranked Carthage College 41-25 over the final 20 minutes of play as the Colonels posted a 72-61 victory in the first-round of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge Saturday in King's Scandlon Gym.

 

With the Wilkes win, the Colonels improved to 6-3 while Carthage slipped to 7-3.

Tom Kresge led Wilkes with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Chris DeRojas scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half.  Paul Huck added 15 points while Anthony Gabriel tallied nine with six rebounds.

 

Carthage, which hurt itself when two starters were forced to the bench with four fouls each early in the second half, was paced by Steve Djurickovic with a game-high 20 points and five assists. Tyler Pierce followed with 15 points while Mitch Thompson added eight points.

Wilkes will face John Jay Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym while Carthage does battle with King's at 3:00 p.m.
