SECOND HALF SCORING WOES DOOMS KING'S AGAINST CARTHAGE, WILKES DOWNS JOHN JAY TO GO 2-0 AT WILKES-BARRE CHALLENGE
(Monarchs score just 17 second-half points in loss)
WILKES-BARRE – In its first-round Wilkes-Barre Challenge tournament victory over John Jay College on Saturday, the King's College men's basketball team enjoyed its finest shooting effort of the season in a 100-64 triumph. In King's second round contest on Sunday, the Monarchs may have wished they had saved some scoring against 23rd ranked Carthage College as a woeful second half of shooting resulted in a 69-46 loss at the hands of the Red Men.
King's (3-8) took a measure of momentum into the second halftime break as a Mike Wagner three-pointer at the buzzer drew the Monarchs to within 32-29 at the break. However, when the final stanza began, King's struggled mightily from the field from both the inside and the outside. Trailing 40-35 with 15:29 remaining in the contest, King's went scoreless for a 7:37 span when Kevin Conroy broke the dry spell with a pair of foul shots to end a 16-0 Carthage run as the Monarchs fell behind 56-37 with 7:52 to play.
The Red Men (8-3) kept the pressure on and King's continued to struggle from the field as a pair of Steve Djurickovic free throw gave Carthage their biggest lead of the game at 63-39 with 4:07 on the clock. All toll, King's managed to score just 10 points during the first 16:25 of the second half and a final second half total of 17 points.
Kevin Conroy, who was named to the all-tournament team, led King's with 18 points and five rebounds as the only Monarch player to reach double figures. Jim Schule followed with eight points and five boards while Kyle Stackhouse contributed six points and four assists. Mike Wagner chipped in with five points and four boards.
Djurickovic led Carthage with 30 points, eight assists, and six rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Max Carey added 13 points and four steals, while Tyler Pierce also gained all-tournament honors after contributing with seven points and five rebounds.
