KING'S WOMEN FALL TO FIRST-PLACE MANHATTANVILLE, 59-56

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Manhattanville College outscored the King's College women's basketball team 7-4 over the last 4:46 of play as the first-place Valiants posted a 59-56 victory in a Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, Manhattanville remained atop the league standings, improving to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in Freedom Conference play. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 9-10 and 4-4 in league play.

With King's trailing 52-51, King's took a 52-52 lead when Celia Rader made one-of-two foul shots with 4:46 to play.  Manhattanville countered when King's defense failed to locate Jannetta Arnold, who buried a three-pointer with 3:54 remaining to give the Valiants a 55-53 lead.  Following a King's turnover, Manhattanville capitalized on driving lay-up by Taylor Wilson to put the Valiants on top 57-53 with 2:46 left.

Juliana Lynott brought King's to within 57-54 by making the second of a two-shot foul at the 2:32 mark, but Carol Ortize drove through the King's defense to score on a la-y-up with 2:20 to play, giving the Valiants a 59-54 lead.  After the teams traded turnovers, King's cut the margin to 59-56 when Rader canned two more charity tosses with 1:31 left.

After a Manhattanville miss, King's failed to tale advantage when Julianna Lynott's short jumper caromed off the front of the rim with 0:34 on the clock, but the Lady Monarchs caught a break when Carey Hickey immediately turned the ball over. With another opportunity in its grasp, King's was once again unable to take advantage when Brittany Muscatell turned the ball over with 0:27 to play.  With King's still trailing 59-56 the Lady Monarchs were forced to foul and put Hickey on the line to attempt a one-and-one. Hickey missed the first shot and Lynott rebounded with 0:21 remaining.

Paige Carlin would look to tie the game up with a three-pointer from the left wing, but the ball rolled in and out of the rim. Simona Gordon rebounded for the Valiants and was fouled with 0:07 left in the contest. Gordon gave King's a glimmer of hope when she missed the first end of a one-and-one and Megan Rigous rebounded for King's. Manhattanville applied immediate double-team defensive pressure and Rigous struggled to advance the ball up court. Rigous would find Rader, who would attempt a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer. The shot would fall short of the rim as Manhattanville held on for the victory.

Lynott led King's with 14 points and nine rebounds while Lindsay Atchison followed with 11 points and five rebounds. Carlin added 11 points and two assists while Rader tallied eight points off the bench. Muscatell chipped in with six points and three assists. King's struggled mightily from three-point range, making just 1-of-14 from downtown.

Gordon was the lone double-figures scorer for Manhattanville, tallying 14 points and eight rebounds. Arnold and Courtney Turner tallied nine points each.

King's returns to action Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs travel to St. David's to meet Eastern University at 6:00 p.m.
