PAIGE CARLIN NETS 20 AS LADY MONARCHS HANDLE STATEN ISLAND IN ECAC TOURNEY FINALE, 62-49
ORLANDO, FL -- Sophomore small forward Paige Carlin netted 20 points to power the King's College women's basketball team to a 62-49 victory over the College of Staten Island on the final day of the ECAC Holiday Tournament Monday in Orlando.
With the win, King's evened its mark at 6-6 while Staten Island slipped to 3-7.
King's got off to a solid start and built a 13-point lead just 5:58 into the game when a consecutive buckets by Carlin, an inside basket from Julianna Lynott, and a three-pointer by Megan Rigous gave the Lady Monarchs a 16-3 lead with 14:02 left in the half. Leading 17-5 with 13:01 on the clock, both teams would go scoreless for the next 3:51 until Carlin hit one-of-two foul shots at the 9:10 mark.
From there Staten Island chipped away and cut the lead to 25-20 on a three-pointer by Allie Shanahan with 3:00 remaining in the first half. King's, however, ended the half with a 6-2 spurt before taking a 31-23 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half King's would reestablish itself with a 9-4 surge to take a 40-27 lead with 13:42 to go. After a Dolphin bucket, the Lady Monarchs responded with a a baskets from Abbey Mallow and a traditional three-point play from Carlin to stretch the advantage to 45-29 with 11:22 left. King's would later build its largest lead of the game at 17 points on two occasions, the last coming on a Carlin jumper with 6:51 to play, giving the Lady Monarchs a comfortable 52-35 advantage.
Staten Island would draw no closer than 14 points until a late three-pointer by Danielle McLaughlin brought the final margin to 62-49.
Carlin added nine points to her game –high scoring total and contributed four assists. Liz Demko tallied 11 points and five rebounds while Rigous posted nine points, three rebounds, and three assists. Malloy netted seven points while Brittany Muscatell tallied four points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Staten Island was paced by Shanahan with 17 points and nine rebounds while McLaughlin added nine points and four boards.
King's returns to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Gwynedd-Mercy College.
