MONARCH MEN REBOUND FOR 79-62 VICTORY OVER FDU-FLORHAM AS MIKE WAGNER TALLIES CAREER-HIGH 27 POINTS
WILKES-BARRE -- Mike Wagner scored a career-high 27 points to power the King's College to a 79-62 victory over visiting FDU-Florham Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in Freedom Conference play. FDU, meanwhile, fell to 0-11 and 0-3 in league play.
The contest was a game of runs with the first half resulting in six lead changes. With the game tied 23-23 with 6:54 remaining in the first half, the Monarchs a used a 5-0 run, keyed by five straight points from Wagner to build a 28-23 lead at the 5:19 mark. After FDU cut the lead to 28-25, Wagner caned a three-pointer to register his eighth consecutive points as King's took a 31-25 lead at the 4:56 mark.
After the Devils closed to within 31-27 on a driving layup by George Twill, King's countered with a 7-0 run following jumpers by Kyle Stackhouse and Kevin Conroy, along with a three-pointer from Nick Reisig to give the Monarchs a 38-27 lead with 2:48 remaining in the half. The Devils cut the lead to 38-32 on a bucket by Twill, but Matt Fiorino canned a three-pointer to give King's a 41-32 lead at the half.
In the second stanza, the Devils immediately went to work, using a14-4 run to take a 46-45 lead on a three-pointer by Joe Missale with 14:47 to play. The Monarchs tied the score when Conroy converted one-of-two foul shots on the next possession. The Devils would 50-47 lead on a Twill bucket but King's fought back to capture a 51-50 advantage with 11:09 left on jumpers from Jim Schule and Conroy. The Devils take what amounted to their final lead of the day when Derek Hall canned two charity tosses to give FDU a 52-51 lead with 10:31 remaining.
From there, the Monarchs went on a 13-3 surge, keyed by two three-pointer from Wagner and jumpers from Schule and Conroy to take a 64-55 lead with 7:55 to play. After FDU cut the lead to 64-57 on a Ricky Fetske basket with 7:19 on the clock, King's put the game away with a decisive 12-2 run. Two more treys from Wagner, an inside bucket by Conroy, and two foul shots with 2:49 to play would give the Monarchs an insurmountable 76-59 lead. The Devils would draw no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Wagner was 8-of-15 from the field, including 7-of-14 from three-point range while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. Conroy followed with 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists while Stackhouse added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
FDU was paced by Fetske with 22 points and 14 rebounds while Twill added 20 points and three boards. Missale chipped in with 10 points to aid the Devils.
King's returns to action Monday when the Monarchs travel to face Penn State Hazleton in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
