KING'S FIELD HOCKEY CLINCHES SEOCND IN FREEDOM WITH 4-0 WIN OVER DESALES
WILKES-BARRE – Calli Berryman scored two goals and the King's College field hockey team clinched the second seed in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament as the Lady Monarchs posted a 4-0 victory over visiting DeSales University Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win, King's improved to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in Freedom Conference play while DeSales slipped to 7-11 and 1-6 in league competition. In the process, King's earned a first-round home playoff game next Wednesday.
King's took a 1-0 lead 16:40 into the first half when Jenera Quinones navigated through three defenders and hit Calli Berryman with a perfect thru ball up the middle. Berryman then beat DeSales keeper Nicole Schneider inside the right post for the first goal of the game.
The Lady Monarchs would capitalize on a penalty corner just before time ran out in the first half. Shelby Trenge took the entry pass and advanced the ball just inside the top of the circle. From there, Trenge blasted a shot inside the right post just beyond the reach of Schneider for a 2-0 King's halftime lead.
King's built a 3-0 lead at the 58:34 mark following another penalty corner when Quinones ripped a shot from the top of the circle inside the left post.
The lead grew to 4-0 3:24 later when Berryman took a short inside pass from Jackie Sikora to beat Schneider
The Lady Monarchs held a 16-5 lead in shots as well as a 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Erin McGinley made three saves for King's while Schneider posted seven stops for the Bulldogs
King's will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when the Lady Monarchs host Albright College at McCarthy Stadium in a game that was originally postponed due to rain in September.
