KING'S WIN OVERCOME 12 POINT HALF-TIME DEFICIT TO POST 77-71 OVERTIME ROAD WIN OVER EASTERN
ST. DAVID'S -- The King's College women's basketball team overcame a 12-point half-time deficit and outscored host Eastern University 43-31 during the second half and overtime period as the Lady Monarchs pulled out a gutty 77-71 victory in the Freedom Conference openers for both teams Wednesday night in St. David's.
With the win, King's improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Freedom Conference play. Eastern, meanwhile, slipped to 4-2 and 0-1.
As has been the pattern for much of the early season, King's struggled in the first half and trailed 33-21 at the break. The Lady Monarchs, as they have also done, came out for the second half on fire and got right back in the game. King's went on a 15-3 run to close to within 37-36.
Carlin gave King's its first lead of the second half by draining a three-pointer with 16:05 to play as the Lady Monarchs grabbed a 38-37 advantage. King's continued the assault and completed a 22-4 run on a Carlin bucket to build a 43-37 with 13:59 to play.
With the score 56-53, Rader was fouled in scoring on an offensive rebound and made good on the free-throw to complete a three-point play as the Lady Monarch lead grew to 57-53 with 7:27 to play.
Eastern answered with a Shante Jones jumper to bring the score to 57-53 at 6:49. Rader struck again when she was fouled and made both shots to extend the King's lead to 59-53 with 6:05 on the clock.
Mary Poole brougth the Eagles to within 59-55 with a pair of foul shots at the 5:17 mark. Jess Ogden was then fouled and made the second of two shots to narrow the King's lead to 59-56 with 4:50 to play.
After a King's miss, Jones scored on a layup as the Eagles cut the lead to 59-58 with 4:07 left.
After an eastern miss coming out of a time out, Rader drive the middle for a layup to give King's a 61-58 lead with 3:07 remaining.
Bekah Roland brought the Eagles to within 61-60 with two foul shots, but Lindsay Atchison was fouled while making an inside shot and converted the free throw to push the King's lead to 64-60 with 1:59 left
A bucket by Jones then cut the King's lead to 64-62 with 0:40 left. After a King's miss, Eastern looked to tie the game and Lori Wileczek snared the offensive rebound but missed on the put back. King's, however was unable to secure the all important rebound and Poole grabbed the lose ball with 0:06 left and was promptly fouled by Rader who left the game for good with her fifth personal foul. Poole would make both foul shots to to send the game into overtime.
Atchison opened with a traditional three-point play to give King's a 67-64 lead. After an Eagle miss the King's sophonore buried a critical three-pointer to extend the lead to 70-64 with 3:23 to go.
After the teams traded baskets, Atchison made three of four foul shots to give the Lady Monarchs a 75-67 with 0:51 on the clock. Following an Eastern basket by Jones, Carissa Gegaris made one of two foul shots for a 75-69 King's lead. Abby Malloy added a foul shot with 0:05 left to seal the 77-71 victory.
Rader finished with one of the best games of her career, totaling 24 points and a career-high 11 rebounds and three assists. Atchison added 17 points, including eight overtime points, and 13 rebounds. Carlin, who also fouled out in the final minutes of regulation, contributed 15 points and eight boards. Muscatell chipped in with nine points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Eastern was paced by Jones with 23 points and nine rebounds while Poole tallied 16 points and eight boards.
King's will host Freedom Conference rival Manhattanville College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
