King's (4-4) opened up an eight point lead midway through the first frame at 17-9, as forwards Kevin Conroy and Ian Oakley scored inside on consecutive possessions. Nick Reisig dialed home a deep three-pointer to extend the lead to 23-13 with 7:09 remaining in the half. Potsdam slowly began to chip away at the lead over the next five minutes of play cutting the deficit to one at 29-28 following a trey from Eddie Cross. From there, Oakley corralled a rebound with seconds remaining and sank a shot as the horn sounded just inside the half court line to send the Monarch to the break up 39-34.
King's continue to pound the ball inside in the second frame using a 9-1 run in the opening minutes to extend the lead to 56-41 with 12:37 left. Conroy scored inside and cashed in on four consecutive free throws before Reisig connected on another trey from long distance. The lead would swell to as many as 22 points (81-59) late in the contest as the Monarchs cruised to an opening round win.
Conroy led the way with a game-high 23 points and three rebounds, shooting 7-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Rookie Kyle Hammonds enjoyed his best outing this season finishing with 16 points and three boards, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Reisig rounded out the double figure scorers posting 16 points, including four three-pointers. Oakley added eight points, while Kyle Stackhouse contributed four points, four rebounds, and a game-high eight assists.
King's was red hot shooting from the floor, finishing the game at an impressive 50.0 percent (27-54) clip. It was just as good from long distance as King's hit 10-of-20 attempts from behind the arc, their best mark this season. The foul line, which has posed a problem early this season for King's, was not an issue as the Monarchs shot 84.6 percent (22-26) from the stripe.
Anthony Williams led Potsdam with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Rob Duquette added 13 points and three boards, while Eddie Cross finished with 10 points.
In the first game, Salisbury University overcame a 15-point half-time deficit to post a 64-62 victory over Brooklyn College in the opening round of the PNC/Ramada Inn Classic at King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. David Pearman scored 19 of his team-high 23 points in the second half while Chris McGrew added 11 of his 19 in the second stanza.
With the game tied at 62-62, Salisbury took its only lead of the game with 0:31 left when McGrew scored down low off an assist by Mike Maczko. Brooklyn had a chance to take the lead or tie the score but missed three shot shots down the stretch, including a three-pointer by Brian Shea at 0:09 and a driving lay-up by Amil John with 0:01 left.
Brooklyn was led by Tyshawn Russell with 18 points while John added 13.
Salisbury will play King's for the championship Saturday at 3:00 p.m. while Brooklyn faces Potsdam State in the 1:00 p.m. consolation game.
