LADY MONARCHS CLOSE OUT FIRST SEMESTER WITH 74-52 VICTORY OVER KEYSTONE
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team enjoyed one of its most balanced efforts of the season as 11-of-12 players reached the scoring column as the Lady Monarchs posted a 74-52 voctory over visiting Keystone College Saturday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 7-3 on the year while Keystone stands at 1-8.
The Lady Monarchs raced out of the gates and built a quick 15-4 lead after Celia Rader and Brittany Muscatell three-pointers and a steal and jumper by Samantha Simcox with 14:13 left in the half. King's would go cold, however, and Keystone slowly worked its way back into the game. The Lady Giants took advantage of King's offensive slump by going on a 12-4 run to close to within 19-16 on a traditional three-point play from Sarah Barreto at the 6:37 mark.
The Lady Monarchs, though would close out the half with a 12-4 surge thanks to four point from Simcox, a lay-up from Brittany Muscatell, and back-to-back three-pointers from Katlin Michaels and Paige Carlin to take a 31-20 lead at the break.
In the second half King's continued to stretch the lead as four points from Carlin and two more three-pointers by Nina Magan and Abby Malloy pushed the King's lead to 46-26 with 15:21 to play. The Lady Giants would cut the lead to 13 points when a Melinda Moore lay-up trimmed the King's advantage to 49-36 with 10:04 to play.
But King's countered after Rader scored seven of King's next 10 points to ignite a 17-9 spurt to give the Lady Monarchs a 66-45 lead with 4:03 remaining.
Carlin led King's with 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Simcox tallied 10 points and seven boards; Michaels added 10 points and five rebounds; while Rader netted 10 points with two steals. Muscatell tallied seven points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and four steals while Magan also chipped in with seven points.
Keystone was paced by Ellen Fallon with 19 points while Moore contributed 13 points and six boards.
King's will be idle until January 2-3 when the Lady Monarchs compete in the Moravian Invitational Tournament.
