WILKES-BARRE – Lori Lidlow scored a game-high 27 points and the DeSales University women's basketball team held off two big King's College second-half comeback bids as the visiting Bulldogs posted a 75-63 Freedom conference victory Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, DeSales improved to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in Freedom Conference play. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in league games.
DeSales opened the game with a 5-0 spurt thanks to a three-pointer from Kelly Magrann and a steal and lay-up by Lori Lidlow. After King's got on the board on a jumper by Kayla Dick, the Bulldogs answered with buckets from Colleen Gavin and Magrann to take a 9-2 lead with 15:21 left in the first half. King's used two foul shots by Celia Rader to trim the score to 9-4, but DeSales countered with a lay-up from Megan Montchyk and a jumper by Magrann to build a 15-4 lead with 12:20 on the clock.
King's battled back and used three-pointers from Rader and Dick and a driving lay-up by Carlin to cut the lead to 17-12 with 9:58 to play. With DeSales holding a 22-17 advantage, the Bulldogs turned a jumper from Cherelle Simmons, a jumper by Gavin, and three-pointer from Lidlow into a 29-17 lead with 6:22 remaining. In the second half the Bulldogs came out of the gates and quickly used a 10-3 run to build 46-31 following a Hannah Smith bucket. The Bulldogs would later stretch the margin to 17 points when a three-pointer by Magrann upped the Bulldog advantage to 54-37 with 13:24 remaining.
Rather than fold, the Lady Monarchs battled back. A three-pointer from Dick, 3-of-4 foul shots by Rader brought King's to within 54-44 at the 12:11 mark. After a DeSales bucket, the Lady Monarchs again chipped away as a bucket by Carlin and two more from Rigous brought the Lady Monarchs to within 56-49. After a DeSales miss, Carlin followed with a traditional three-point play to draw the lady Monarchs to within 56-52 with 9:01 on the clock.
The Bulldogs, however, recaptured the momentum and used a 10-2 run of its own to build the lead back up to 66-54 with 5:53 to play. King's once again battled back as three-pointer from Jess Segilia, a pair of foul shots by Dick and a three-point play by Molly Dahl cut the DeSales lead to 68-62 with 2:56 remaining.
That was as close as the Lady Monarchs would come Lidlow scored on a runner, then followed up with a bucket and foul shot to extend the lead to 73-62 with 1:39 left. After Dahl made one-of-two foul shots with 1:25 to play, Jess Hoover wrapped up the scoring with an inside basket for DeSales with 1:00 left in the contest.
