KING'S MEN'S STUNNED BY FDU-FLORHAM 69-57, MONARCHS NOW STAND IN THREE-WAY TIE FOR SECOND IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE
MADISON, NJ -- Entering Sunday's Freedom Conference matchup against FDU-Florham, the King's College men's basketball team was locked in a second-place tie with Eastern University in the league standings, while the Devils were in the midst of a 1-18 season, including a last-place 0-9 conference mark.
In a game of role reversal, FDU played like the team battling for a top playoff seed while King's took on the role of upstart as the Devils pulled off a stunning 69-57 upset over the Monarchs in the Ferguson Recreation Center.
With the loss, King's fell to 10-11 overall and 6-4 in Freedom Conference play with its second straight conference defeat. Despite the loss, the Monarchs now stand in a three-way tie for second as Misericordia joined the pack, posting a 61-44 victory over Eastern.
The teams played on virtually even terms at the start as the Devils held a 7-6 lead after 4:31 of play. FDU, however would heat up and outscored the Monarchs 13-2 over the next 5:14, building a 20-8 lead with 10:05 left in the first half. King's attempted to fight back and cut the lead to 27-21 on a Kevin Conroy down low, but the Devils used a three-pointer from Mike Williamson, a jumper from George Twill, and a driving basket by Andrew Biancosino with 0:32 on the clock as FDU took a commanding 36-21 lead at the break.
In the second half the Devils kept on the pressure, building its biggest lead of the game when a Twill layup with 17:05 on the clock pushed the FDU advantage to 44-22. King's countered with a 13-3 surge to cut the lead to 47-35 on a Danny Maguschak basket with 10:15 remaining but the Monarchs would draw no closer than 12 points the rest of the game.
Williamson led FDU with 18 points and three three-pointers while Ricky Fetske added 16 points and six rebounds. Adam Katz tallied 14 points to aid the Devil cause.
Conroy led King's with 17 points and nine rebounds while Maguschak added 12 points and six boards.
King's will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday when the Monarchs host Delaware Valley College at 8:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
