KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PICK UP BIG 62-58 ROAD WIN OVER FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON, NJ -- Freshman point-guard Celia Rader scored a career-high 20 points in her first career start as the King's College women's basketball team went on the road to post an important 62-58 Freedom Conference victory over host FDU-Florham Saturday in Madison, NJ.
The game was rescheduled for Sunday after being postponed on Saturday due to snow throughout the region.
With the win, King's improved to 11-10 overall and 6-4 in Freedom Conference games while FDU slipped to 10-11 and 4-6 in league play.
King's came quickly out of the gates with a 8-1 run 4:32 into the game thanks to a pair of baskets by Juliana Lynott and Abby Malloy, along with four straight points from Lindsay Atchison. King's continued the assault and stretched the lead to 17-7 on a three-pointer from Paige Carlin with 11:03 left in the opening stanza.
The Lady Monarchs, however, would go cold and the Devils took advantage with a 11-0 run to cut the lead to 17-16 on a pair of foul shots from Lynn Lopez with 6:20 on the clock. King's finally got back on the scoreboard when Rader's two foul shots with 5:22 to go snapped a 5:41 scoreless streak for the Lady Monarchs and pushed the lead to 19-16. After an FDU miss, Rader made good on a driving lay-up to stretch the advantage to 21-16 with 4:55 remaining.
FDU answered with a 10-4 surge and took a 26-25 at the 0:54 mark on four consecutive points from Lopez. The Lady Monarchs, though, took a 28-26 lead into the locker room when Atchison drained a three-pointer with 0:40 left in the opening stanza.
In the second half King's scored the first points to take a 32-26 lead after Carlin and Rader each made a pair of foul shots. The Lady Monarchs later built a 37-28 lead when Lynott converted a traditional three-point play with 17:13 left in the contest. The Devils, however, cut the score to 53-52 on a Shealynn Taggert jumper with 3:37 on the clock. After the teams traded scores, FDU closed to within 55-54 on a pair of Courtney Young foul shots with 2:12 left in the contest. Rader, answered for King's with two free throws of her own to push the lead to 57-54. After a Devil miss, Atchison scored off her offensive rebound to extend the King's lead to 59-54 at 1:16.
Four straight points from FDU cut the lead to 59-59 with 0:28 remaining, but Carlin was fouled on King's next possession and made both foul shots with 0:21 to give the Lady Monarchs a 61-58 lead. Michlovsky would miss down low for FDU and King's Molly Dahl snared the rebound and was fouled with 0:10 to play. Dahl made it a two possession game by hitting one-of-two foul shots to put the game away.
Rader, who had recently returned after missing 10 games with an illness, replaced injured starter Brittany Muscatell in the Lady Monarch lineup. She responded with an outstanding effort, making 5-of-13 shots from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line.
