KING'S BASEBALL DEFEATS MARYWOOD 3-2 WITH RUN IN NINTH INNING

SCRANTON -- Freshman Mike Kusters drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the King's College baseball team posted a 3-2 road win over Marywood University Sunday in Scranton.

With the win, King's improved to 7-2.

With the game knotted at 2-2, Eric Matula led off the ninth inning with a critical double. Kuster then came to the plate and calmly singled Matula home with the eventual deciding run. Relief pitcher Brenton Eades would enter the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out and shut the door on the Pacers.

King's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Denis Rice walked and advanced to second on a base hit from Joey Troxell.  Freshman Chris Sweeney then came through with a RBI single for the Monarchs.

After Marywood scored two runs in the bottom of the frame, King's tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the fifth. Custers would stroke a leadoff single and the Monarchs would load the bases with two more base hits by Brian Mikus and Rice. Joey Troxel would push across King's second run with an infield grounder to second base.

The game would remain tied for the next three innings until the decisive ninth inning.

Custers led King's offensively with a 4-for-5 effort, including the winning RBI. Matt Unger was 2-for-5 while Matula finished 1-for-4.   Freshman Pat Matthews pitched a solid game, lasting eight and one-third innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out seven batters. Eades picked up the save, pitching two-thirds of an inning of hitless relief while striking out one hitter.

King's returns home Tuesday when the Monarchs host Baptist Bible in a 4:00 p.m. single game at the Betzler Athletic Complex.
