KING'S BASEBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE TO EASTERN, 8-7
ST. DAVID -- The King's College baseball team put forth a valiant attempt to rally over the final two innings but the Monarchs came up just short in falling 8-7 to host Eastern University in the final meeting of a three-game weekend series concluding in St. David.
With the loss, King's won the season series 2-1 after posting a doubleheader sweep on Friday in Wilkes-Barre. The Monarchs now stand at 10-4 overall and 5-1 in Freedom Conference play. Eastern, meanwhile, is 7-7 and 2-4 in league games.
Trailing 8-3 in the eighth inning, the Monarchs used a single from Eric Matula and a double by Jeremy Bonser to open the inning. After Brian Mikus drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Matt Pritchard followed with a RBI single to plate Bonser while cutting the score to 8-5. Following a single from Joey Troxel, Rob Fravel and Sean Rooney added RBI singles to cut the Eagle lead to 8-7 with one out and a runners at first and second base. But back-to back fly-ball outs to centerfield ended the threat.
King's had one more chance in the ninth when Chris Sweeney singled and advanced to second on a balk. Fortune, however, would smile upon the Eagles when Matula ripped a line drive that was snagged by Eastern second baseman Dan Garcia, who promptly doubled up Sweeney at second base. Two batters later, a Mikus fly ball to right ended the contest.
Mikus was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Fravel went 2-for-5 and also drove in two runs. Troxel and Bonser also added two hits apiece for the Monarchs.
