KING'S BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH WILKES
WILKES-BARRE – Dan Jenkins tossed a nifty four-hitter and struck out nine batters as the King's College baseball team salvaged a split with a 7-0 victory over visiting Wilkes University in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex. Wilkes won the opening game 13-5.
With the split King's stands at 15-10 overall and 9-5 in Freedom Conference play while Wilkes is now 10-14 and 3-11 in league games.
Jenkins was making just his second start of the season after suffering through an early-season injury to his pitching arm. A 2009 second-team All-Freedom Conference selection, Jenkins was outstanding in pitching his first complete game of the season. The senior right-hander did not allow more than one hit or more than one base runner in any inning.
King's took a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Rob Lemoncelli and a two-run double by Brenton Eades. The Monarchs added two more runs in the third inning when Chris Sweeney singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Mikus. Matt Unger, who earlier reached base on an error, scored on a base hit off the bat of Pat Harsch.
The Monarchs added a run in the fourth inning when Sweeney belted a solo home run, his fourth round-tripper of the year, over the centerfield fence. King's closed out the scoring in the sixth Rob Fravel doubled and touched home on a RBI single from Mikus. Sweeney, Mikus, and Harsch led King's with two hits apiece.
In the opener, Wilkes held a 3-2 lead but blew the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning. Joel Watson and Al Clocker led the Wilkes attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Clocker added three RBI while Watson tallied two, including a solo home run in the second inning . Matt Ruch was 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI while Angus Neary was 2-for-3 with a triple. Ryan Fetterman earned the pitching win for Wilkes, allowing five runs, four earned in five and one-third innings.
Sweeney led King's by going 2-for-3 while Mikus was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI. Monarch starter Tommy Rozelle took the pitching loss, allowing nine runs in four and one-third innings.
King's and Wilkes will conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Artillery Park in Kingston.
