MONARCH BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON, NJ -- Brian Mikus went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the King's College baseball team posted a 9-7 victory over host FDU-Florham to salvage a doubleheader split Saturday in Madison, NJ. FDU won the first game 2-1. Combined with Friday's 18-12 win over the Monarchs, the Devils won the season series 2-1.
In the second game, Mikus gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead with a two-run single. King's then padded the lead with six runs in the fourth inning. A two-run double by Mikus, a RBI double from Sean Rooney, and run scoring singles by Eric Matula and Rob Fravel gave King's an 8-0 advantage.
After FDU scored two runs in the sixth, the Monarchs countered with one in the seventh when Jeremy Bonser doubled, and later scored on a Devil error to build the lead to 9-2.
FDU attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five unearned runs to cut the score to 9-7. King's relief pitcher Brenton Eades would enter the game, however, struck out the final hitter of the game to give the Monarchs the win.
Fravel was 3-for-3 with a run and RBI while Bonser finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Matula (5-1) picked up the win for King's, allowing seven runs, all unearned, on nine hits while striking out five batters. Eades earned his fourth save of the season.
In the first game, King's took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Matula singled and scored on consecutive FDU errors. The Devils scored the winning runs during their final at-bats in the seventh inning when Greg Geran doubled and moved to third on a bunt. After a walk to Alex Sariyan, Joey Santillo delivered a walk-off, two-run double to win the game for the Devils.
The Monarchs mustered just four hits in the game off of winning FDU pitcher Brian Smith as Joey Troxell, Chris Sweeney, Mikus, and Matula were the lone hitters for King's. Dan Jenkins (3-1) was the hard-luck loser for King's, allowing just five hits with three strikeouts in six and one-third innings.
King's returns to action Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. home doubleheader against Penn College of Technology.
