KING'S BASEBALL WINS SERIES OPENER OVER DELAWARE VALLEY, 9-4

 

WILKES-BARRE --  The King's College baseball team broke open a close game with a five-run seventh inning as the Monarchs posted a 9-4 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the first game of a three-game weekend series Friday at Lipo Field.

 

With the win, King's improved to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 8-12-1 overall and 1-9 in league competition.

The teams will conclude their season series with a doubleheader Saturday at 12:00 noon in Doylestown. Fans can view the game on LiveStats at the following link:

King's opened the scoring in the bottom of the third innings when Brian Mikus and Jeremy Bonser both singled. Sean Rooney delivered a run-scoring single. Later in the inning Joey Troxell smacked a two-run single to give the Monarchs the early advantage.

 

The Aggies tied up the game with three runs of their own in the fifth inning when Gary Cooper registered an RBI single, followed by a two-run single by Kellen Jarrett.

 

King's recaptured the lead with a run in the sixth inning when Sean Rooney drilled a solo home run over the left field fence. The Monarchs blew the game open in the decisive seventh inning when Troxell singled and Brenton Eades reached base on a Delaware Valley error. After a walk to Rob Fravel loaded the bases, Matt Under stroked a two-run single to centerfield to give the Monarchs a 6-3 lead. Bonser would come through with a two-run single and pinch runner Mike Santiago would later touch home on the second Aggie error of the inning.

 

Delaware Valley pushed across the final run of the game in the ninth when Mike Isgro doubled and pinch hitter Dan Hrubos followed with a RBI single to right field.

Rooney led King's 12-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bonser was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Unger and Troxell both finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.  Monarch starting pitcher Eric Matula (3-1) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.

 

Isgro, Jarrett, and Michael Kerns led the Aggies as each went 3-for-5. Delaware Valley starter Brian Hafer took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned with four strikeouts in six complete innings.

 

The teams will conclude their season series with a doubleheader Saturday at 12:00 noon in Doylestown
