OLD WESTBURY, NY -- Host Old Westbury State scored two goals in the first half of play and held on in the second half despite a furious Monarch rally to post a 2-1 win over King's College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.
With the loss King's slips to 4-3 on the year, while Old Westbury improves to 5-3 overall.
Old Westbury's Anthony Ippolite opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from Thomas Manz at the 32:25 mark of the first half. Just four minutes later, Oraine Pringle extended the lead to 2-0 thanks to an assist from Christopher Barbosa. The Monarchs would answer quickly in the second frame when Alex Martino scored off a Joey Bender helper at the 48:45 mark to cut the deficit in half. Old Westbury's defense would stiffen and hold off a furious King's rally late to escape with the one-goal victory.
The contest was as even as they come as both squads had 14 shots, while King's held a slight 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Monarch goalie Andrew O'Shura made six saves in net for King's, while Old Westbury's keeper Pablo Diaz finished with five stops.
King's will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Berks for a non-conference match scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
