King's Women improve to 6-0 in Freedom Conference with 89-72 Win Over Wilkes

KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROUTES WILKES TO IMPROVE TO 5-0 IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAY

WILKES-BARRE – Katlin Michaels and Paige Carlin combined for 37 points to power the King's College women's basketball team to an 89-72 Freedom Conference victory over host Wilkes University Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center.

With the win, King's improved to 11-5 overall and remain alone in first place in the Freedom Conference with a 5-0 mark. Wilkes, meanwhile, fell to 3-11 and 0-5.  In the process, King's posted its 25 victory over Wilkes in the last 26 meetings between the squads.

In the first half the teams played on virtually even terms for the first 15 minutes as the teams were tied 9-9. A three-pointer from Lindsay Atchison and Abby Malloy was followed by an offensive rebound and put-back from Samantha Simcox to give the Lady Monarchs a 17-11 advantage.

After a Wilkes bucket from Sam Lynam, King's used a steal and bucket from Malloy, one-of-two foul shots by Simcox, and three points from Paige Carlin to stretch the King's lead to 23-15. Following a Wilkes basket by Whitney Connolly, the Lady Monarchs scored seven straight points, five coming from Brittany Muscatell and two from Katlin Michaels to give King's a 30-17 lead with 5:46 left in the half.

After five consecutive points by Lynam brought the Lady Colonels to within 30-22 with 4:56 on the clock, Michaels scored combined to score the Lady Monarchs' next 10 points to extend the advantage to 42-27 at the 0:59 mark. After a Wilkes score, Simcox added one of two foul shots and Jessica McHugh added a foul shot before draining a three-pointer with 0:03 to go as King's took a 46-29 lead into the halftime break.

The assault continued in the second half as King's used two baskets from Carlin and a three-pointer by Atchison to up the margin to 53-49. After Wilkes buckets by Lynam and Angela Palmerio cut the lead to 53-23, the Lady Monarchs struck again with a 7-0 spurt. Two foul shots by Atchison, four straight points by Muscatell, and one-of-two shots by Simcox following a Wilkes technical foul, pushed the lead to 60-33 with 13:37 left in the contest.

Wilkes chipped away and cut the lead to 17 when a traditional three-point play by Connolly cut the margin to 67-50 at the 10:16 mark. But the Lady Monarchs used seven consecutive points from Carlin to stretch the Lady Monarch advantage to 74-50 with 8:55 to go. Later in the game, three-pointers by Kyley Henry and Jessica McHugh pushed the King's lead to 85-60 with 3:23 left in the contest as the Lady Monarchs cruised to victory.

Michaels led King's with 19 points and eight rebounds while Carlin scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half. Malloy added 12 points while McHugh finished with 10. Muscatell enjoyed a fine all-around game by contributed nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the contest.  Simcox, who played for Wilkes during the 2008-09 season before transferring to King's in the fall, had a solid game against her former teammates with nine points and 11 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass. Atchison chipped in with eight points to aid a balanced King's attack.

For Wilkes, Lynam led all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds while Megan Kazmerski tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds. Palmerio and Connolly chipped in with 10 and 13 points respectively.

King's returns to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Misericordia University.
