King's Women Hold Off Defending Champion DeSales 62-54, Regain Sole Possession of First Place in Freedom Conference

LADY MONARCHS HOLD OFF DEFENDING CHAMPION DESALES, MOVE BACK INTO SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST-PLACE IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE

WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team built a 15-point second-half lead and held off a late DeSales University rally as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 62-54 victory over the three-time defending Freedom Conference champion Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in Freedom Conference play. The Bulldogs slipped to 10-7 and 4-3 in league competition.  King's entered the weekend tied for first with Misericordia, but the Cougars were upset 58-46 at FDU-Florham.

King's opened the game with a 5-0 spurt after a three-pointer by Katlin Michaels and two foul shots by Paige Carlin. DeSales countered with a 12-0 run, ignited by six straight points from Lori Lidlow. a three-pointer by Faith Gilbert, and another three-pointer by Lidlow to give the Bulldogs a 12-5 lead with 12:19 left in the first half.

The Lady Monarchs responded 14-3 surge on the strength of three-pointers from Carlin and Carissa Gegaris to give King's a 19-15 advantage with 5:52 on the clock. After DeSales tied the score at 19-19 , the Lady Monarchs outscored the Bulldogs 6-4 the rest of the way to take a 25-23 lead at the break.

In the second half King's led 33-29 but a three-pointer by Brittany Muscatell, a short jumper and driving lay-up from Samatha Simcox and another inside basket by Muscatell, upped the Lady Monarch advantage to 42-29 with 11-29 to go.

After DeSales cut he lead to 42-32 following a Hannah Smith basket, King's used four straight foul shots from Carlin to push the lead back to 46-32 with 9:57 remaining. Later, a three-pointer from Carlin gave King's a 15-point lead, its biggest lead of the game, with 8:16 to play. With the Lady Monarchs holding a 55-40 advantage with 5:53 on the clock, DeSales would look to rally. The Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run and cut the lead to 55-50 after a bucket down low from Cherelle Simmons with 1:58 left.  

But King's regained its composure and Michaels ended the drought with a short jumper to push the lead to 57-50 with 1:31 to go. After a bucket by Lidlow cut the lead to 57-52 with 1:28 on the clock, DeSales elected to foul and the Lady Monarchs came up big, cashing in on 5-of-8 free throws over the final 0:44 to seal the victory.

King's placed four players in double-figures, led by Carlin with 16 points on the day. Michaels added 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Muscatell also contributed 13 points with four boards. Celia Rader netted 10 points while Simcox tallied five.  Lindsay Atchison enjoyed a strong game defensively with a team-high 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Lidlow led all scorers with 22 points for DeSales while Simmons posted 13 points and 17 rebounds.

King's will be idle until Saturday when the Lady Monarchs travel to Purchase, NY to face Manhattanville College at 1:00 p.m..
