KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STRUGGLES IN 70-49 LOSS AT MANHATTANVILLE
PURCHASE, NY – The host Manhattanville College women's basketball team placed four players in double-figures and led from start to finish as the host Valiants posted a decisive 70-49 victory over visiting King's College in a critical Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Purchase, NY.
With the loss, King's slipped to 12-7 and 6-2 in conference games while falling back into a first-place tie with Misericordia, a 79-34 winner over Delaware Valley on Saturday. Manhattanville is now a game beHind in second place after improving to 12-7 and 5-3 in league competition.
In the first half the Valiants opened the game with an 18-6 run, keyed by nine points from Simona Gordon with 13:02 left in the first half. The lead continued to grow when Janetta Arnold canned a three-pointer to put Manhattanvile on top 23-9 at the 11:05 mark.
After Celia Rader scored five straight points fro King's to cut the lead to 25-14 with 8:15 on the clock, Jen McSharar, Courtney Turner, and Gordon scored three consecutive baskets as the Valiants stretched the lead to 17 points as the score grew to 31-14 with 6:13 left in the half.
The Lady Monarchs countered with a bucket by Rader and a three-pointer from Rader to close to within 31-19. After Gordon made a pair of foul shots to up the lead to 33-19, Rader and Samantha Simcox score for King's to close out the half as the Lady Monarchs trailed 33-23 at the break.
The second stanza proved no better for King's as the Valiants used a decisive 19-4 surge over the first 8:52 of the half to build a 52-27 lead with 11:08 remaining. The Lady Monarchs would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way as the Manhattanville walked away with a 70-49 victory.
Rader was the lone King's player to reach double-figures with 10 points. The Lady Monarchs received a combined 13 points from their four other starters. Jessica McHugh added eight off the bench while Kyley Henry netted six points in a reserve role. As a team, King's shot just 30.2 (19-63) percent from the field and a pedestrian 25.0 (5-18) percent from the foul line. The Lady Monarchs were also outrebounded by a 51-35 margin.
Gordon topped the Valiants with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists while Kelly Hyjek followed with 15. Turner tallied 12 points and nine rebounds while Taylor Wilson also added 12 points with seven boards.
King's will return home on Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs host Eastern University at 6:00 p.m.
