Wilkes-Barre, PA-- The King's College field hockey team opened Freedom Conference play with a 3-2 loss against Manhattanville Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Lady Monarchs had built a 2-1 lead on a goal by
Shawna Walp from the right side of the net after
Jenera Quinones had carried the ball to the front of the net and dished it off.
Alyssa Tourdough tied the game 2-2 at 67:17 with a shot off a Megan Greene penalty corner. The Valiants took the lead with just 1:09 to play in the game when Kayla Meenan tallied her second goal of the game after a Chelseas Klein shot trickled past
Megan Withrow.
King's got on the board first on a deflection by
Calli Berryman of a Walp shot at 14:07. That goal gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 halftime lead.
Manhattanville tied the game 1-1 on a Meenan unassisted tally at 48:34.
King's outshot Manhattanville 15-8 and held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners. Walp led the Lady Monarchs with seven shots and Berryman added three.
Withrow took the loss in net making a save and facing all eight shots. She falls to 5-3 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs return to action Monday at 5:00 pm when they finish up their game with Marywood that was suspended at the half with King's leading 2-0.
