Muscatell Lifts Lady Monarchs to Win Over Delaware Valley

Doylestown, PA-- The King's College women's basketball team needed all of Brittany Muscatell's double-double to hold off a late Delaware Valley College rally to earn a 59-56 win in the Freedom Conference opener Wednesday night in Doylestown.

Muscatell hit a pair of free throws with 0:20 remaining to give the Lady Monarchs (5-1, 1-0 Freedom) a 59-56 lead. The Aggies (5-1, 0-1) had a chance to tie the game when Brittany Battinieri attempted a 3-pointer, but had ithe shot rim out. Celia Rader pulled down the rebound to secure the win.

Delaware Valley used a 3-pointer from Battinieri to cut the King's lead to 49-48 with 6:41 to play in the game. The Lady Monarchs used an 8-0 run capped by a pair of Ashley Davies free throws to hold a 56-48 lead with just 4:31 on the clock.

At the 17:06 mark of the second half the teams were tied at 30-30. The Lady Monarchs went on a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes to build the largest lead of the game 45-34, but Delaware Valley responded with a 11-4 run of its own to cut the deficit to 47-45, with just 7:44 to play.

Shannon Barlow tied the game at 16 with 9:10 to play in the first half before the Lady Monarchs used a 12-4 surge, capped by a Molly Dahl free throw to take a 28-20 lead with 1:19 left in the half.  The Aggies answered with seven unanswered points to trim the halftime deficit to 28-27.

Muscatell led all scorers with 16 points and finished her double-double with 12 rebounds. Samantha Simcox added nine points and a game-high 13 boards. Katlin Michaels, Paige Carlin and Rader all chipped in with nine points.

Jakie Shunkwiler paced the Delaware Valley offense with 13 points. Battinieri scored 12 points and added five rebound. Brenna Coll added a double-double of her own with 10 points and 12 boards.

The Lady Monarchs return home on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m. at Scandlon Gymnasium in Freedom Conference action.
