KING'S WOMEN'S CAGERS IMPROVE TO 6-1 WITH 90-73 VICTORY OVER FDU

WILKES-BARRE —  King's College women's basketball team raced out to a 33-8 lead and never looked back as the Lady Monarchs posted a 90-73 victory over visiting FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference play while FDU slipped to 3-5 and 0-2.

The Lady Monarchs exploded out of the gates, scoring the first 11 points of the contest thanks to four points from Samantha Simcox, a three-pointer by Celia Rader and a pair of inside buckets from Katlin Michaels and Paige Carlin. After an FDU bucket, the Lady Monarchs used a short jumper from Simcox and another Rader try to push the score to 16-2 with 14:43 left in the first half.  King's continued t pout it on and a three-pointer by Lindsay Atchison and a Rader lay-up gave King's a 25-4 lead at the 12:47 mark. 

Following an FDU bucket, King's continued to build on the lead when FDU head coach Mark Mitchell was nailed with back-to-back technical fouls and was ejected from the game.  Carlin stepped to the foul line and made four consecutive free throws and Rader hit her third three-pointer of the half to give King's a 36-10 lead with 8:58 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Lady Monarchs maintained a 20-plus point advantage and took its biggest lead of the half (27 points) when Ashley Davies made two foul shots and Lindsay Atchison converted one-of-two charity tossed to give the Lady Monarchs a 49-22 lead with 0:15 on the clock. FDU would cut the lead to 29-24 at the break on a basket with 0:01 to play.

In the second half, King's built a 30-point lead on a Molly Dahl bucket with 15:29 to play s the Lady Monarch lead swelled to 58-28. With King's holding 73-46 advantage with 9:18 to go, FDU attempted to battle back after Lady Monarch coach Brian Donoghue pulled his starters.  The Devils forced several quick turnovers to go on a 14-0 run over a 1:59 span to cut the lead to 73-60 with 6:38 left in the contest. King's starters would re-enter the game and FDU would draw no closer the rest of the way.

Carlin led King's with 25 points and eight rebounds while Rader netted 21 points with four three-pointers. Simcox followed with 15 points and five boards while Michaels contributed nine points and seven assists. Atchison chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Kyra Dayon led FDU with 21 points while Jalessa Lewis added 11 as the lone double-figure scorers for FDU.

King's returns to the court Tuesday night when the Lady Monarchs travel to face Gwynedd-Mercy College.
