MONARCH CAGERS POST 71-51 WIN OVER PENN STATE HAZLETON

HAZLETON – The King's College men's basketball team improved to 4-3 on the year as the Monarchs posted a 71-51 victory over host Penn State Hazleton (3-4) Tuesday night in Hazleton.

In the first half the teams played on virtual even terms as the Monarchs held a 15-14 lead with 8:53 left in the opening stanza. King's, however, used a jumper from Matt Fiorino, a three-pointer by Mike Foster and a steal and lay-up from Kyle Stackhouse to forge ahead 22-14 with 5:25 on the clock after near three scoreless minutes, the Monarchs added a free throw from Ian Oakley and a lay-up by Donovan Womack to built a 25-14 advantage at the 1:34 mark.

The Lions broke a near five-minute scoreless span with two foul shots by Alex Akaboju to cut the lead to 25-16, but the Monarchs close out the final 1:16 with a 6-1 spurt, capped four straight points from Keyton Winder as King's took a 31-16 lead into the locker room.

In the second half King's continued to stretch the lead, pushing the score to 50-30 on a pair of foul shots form Allen Kuiper and a bucket from Kyle Hammonds with 10:54 left in the contest. The Monarchs took their biggest lead of the game at 70-40 with 2:22 to go following a lay-up by Eric Brown and an offensive rebound and put back by Jonathan Gilmore.

King's placed 12 players in the scoring column, led by Kyle Hammonds with 10 points. Tim O'Shea, Matt Fiorino, Mike Foster, and Ian Oakley added eight points apiece. Kuiper added six points and eight rebounds while Nick Reisg dished out for assists.

Mike Taylor led the Lions with 13 points while Akaboju added 10 points and 11 boards.

King's returns to action Friday and Satirday with the annual PNC Banl/Monarch Invitational in Scandlon Gymnasium. Susquenanna tips off against Carnegie Mellon Friday at 6:00 p.m. while King's meets Penn State Harrisburg at 8:00 p.m. On Satiurday, the consolation game takes place at 1:00 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 3:00 p.m.
