Monarch Baseball Rallies Past Maine-Presque Isle, 6-3

KING'S BASEBALL RALLIES PAST MPI, 6-3

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team overcame a 3-1 deficit after four innings to post a 6-3 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first-ever meeting between the schools Saturdat at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

With the win, King's improved to 4-8 while MPI slipped to 0-8.

King's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mike Fignar singled, stole second, and scored on a base hit from Chris Sweeney.
 
After MPI scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Monarchs responded in the bottom half of the fifth.
 
Joe Troxell reached base on a bunt single and moved to third on a double by Anthony ReFignar then lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Troxell while Re advanced to third. The Monarchs then tied the score at 3-3 when Re scored on a passed ball.

In the sixth inning Jared Turner led off the inning by being hit by a pitch while Rich Acierno drew a one-out walk.  After an errant pick-off play at first base, Turner scored from second base while Acierno advanced to third. The Monarchs then took a 5-3 lead when Acierno scored on another passed ball.

The Monarchs added a final run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Fignar singled and advanced to second on an error. A Rob Lemoncelli ground out to second moved Fignar to third base and Turner then followed with a RBI single up the middle to push the score to 6-3.

Fignar led King's with a 2-for-3 showing with two runs and a RBI. Sweeney and Turner each added one hit and a RBI while Re, Acierno, and Troxell contributed with one hit each.

Ryan Weiner was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts in six full innings. Anthony Sangirardi picked up the save with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.

The Monarchs will open up MAC Freedom Conference play today (Sunday) with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against FDU-Florham at Lipo Field.
