MONARCH SOCCER TEAM TALLIES 2-0 WIN OVER PENN STATE BERKS FOLLOWING EIGHT-DAY LAYOFF
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's soccer team shook off the affects of an eight-day layoff caused by the area flooding from Hurricane Irene by scoring two goals in the second half as the Monarchs posted a 2-0 victory over Penn State Berks Tuesday night in McCarthy Stadium.
With the win, King's improved to 2-0-1 while Berks fell to 0-6 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, the Monarchs missed out on a golden opportunity with 27:01 left in game when Alex Martino pushed a penalty kick wide of the net.
Undaunted, King's finally reached the scoreboard when Billy Elliott struck net on a header with 15:16 left in the contest following a corner kick by Martino.
The Monarchs added an insurance goal with 0:22 left in the match when Kevin Buchanan beat a pair of defenders inside the box to tack on the final score of the night.
King's dominated the action, outshooting Penn State Berks 27-2, but had only eight shots on goal. The Monarchs also held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
King's goalie Mark Labbadia posted his third straight shutout, making two saves
The Monarchs will be idle until Saturday when the Monarchs travel to face Juniata College at 3:30 p.m., then hit the road on Sunday to face St. Vincent College at 1:00 p.m. in Latrobe.
