KING'S FIELD HOCKEY CLINCHES TOP SEED IN FREEDOM WITH 3-2 WIN OVER DESALES
?WILKES-BARRE -- Meghan Wernimont scored the game-winning goal with 11:41 remaining in the contest as the King's College field hockey team posted a hard-fought 3-2 victory over visiting DeSales University Tuesday at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win, King's clinched the top seed for next week's Freedom Conference Tournament as the Lady Monarchs improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play. A determined DeSales squad played strong in defeat while slipping to 3-14 and 0-7 in Freedom Conference games.
King's got on the scoreboard first when Abby McManus found the back of the net unassisted just 4:06 into the match. DeSales, however, answered at the 18:17 mark when Metyah Harding scored on a put-back of her own rebound to tie the score at 1-1.
King's recaptured the lead when Stephanie Wingerter made good on a penalty stroke with 3:47 left in the first-half as the Lady Monarchs took a 2-1 lead at the break.
DeSales, however, continued to battle and tied the game at 2-2 when Amanda Trickey scored off at attempted clear by King's just 1:26 into the final period.
King's captured the lead for good when Wernimont from scored off a pass by Calli Berryman with 11:41 left in what proved to be the game-winner.
King's held a slim 14-12 advantage in shots as well as a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.
King's goalie Megan Withrow made five saves on the day.
The Lady Monarchs will now await word on its Freedom Conference Tournament opponent when King's hosts the semi-final round next Wednesday at a time to be determined.
