MICHAELS TRIPLE DOUBLE LEADS KING'S WOMEN PAST DELAWARE VALLEY

WILKES-BARRE — Katlin Michaels posted the first recorded triple-double in King's College women's basketball history and teammates Ashley Davies and Lindsay Atchison each added double-doubles of their own as the host Lady Monarchs opened Freedom Conference play with a 75-69 victory over Delaware Valley College Wednesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league competition. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 1-3 and 0-1.

King's raced out to a 15-4 start after a three-pointer by Davies with 13:05 left in the first half. The Aggies fought back and trimmed the lead to 20-15 following a three-pointer by Eireann Aanastasi wth 10:00 remaining in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs countered with a 8-2 spurt to push the score to 28-17 at the 5:58 mark thanks to six straight points from Davies.  Delaware Valley again battled back and used a 11-4 run of its own to cut the score to 32-28  after a Shannon Barlow jumper with 0:34 on the clock. But King's Jessica McHugh buried a three-pointer with 0:17 left to give the Lady Monarchs a 35-28 lead at the break.

In the Aggies slowly chipped away and came to within 50-47 on a driving lay-up by Breanna Coll. But King's responded with a 10-2 run to bring the score to 60-49 after a Michaels jumper with 7:19 left in the contest. After the teams traded baskets, the Aggies cut the lead to 63-57 on another Coll bucket, but the Lady Monarchs countered with a 5-0 spurt on an inside basket by Davies and a three-pointer from Michaels to extend the lead to 68-57 with 3:00 to go.

The Aggies cut the lead to 69-65 on a three-pointer from Amanda Turowski, but the Lady Monarchs used a lay-up from Marissa Manning and three-of four foul shots over the final 0:24 to seal the victory.

Michaels was outstanding with her all-around game, shooting 5-of-13 from the field while snaring 10 of her 11 rebounds on the defensive end. Her 13 assists were tied for the second-highest single-game total in Lady Monarch history. She also chipped in with two steals.  Her triple-double was the first at King's since the statistic began being recorded for both the men's and women's programs in 1992.

Davies was 5-of-9 from the field while Atchison made 5-of-10 shots.  Nearly lost in the shuffle for King's was shooting guard Celia Rader who poured in 20 points, including six three-pointers. Manning nearly had a double-double of her own with nine points and nine rebounds.

Delaware Valley was led by Eireanna Anastasi who posted 22 points and five rebounds, including six three-pointers. Emily Soper added 13 points and seven rebounds while Coll tallied 12 points and 17 rebounds. Turowski also chipped in with 12 points.

King's returns to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Freedom Conference matchup against FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ.
