KING'S CAGERS FALL TO ONCE-BEATEN LYCOMING 74-65 IN SEMESTER FINALE
WILLIAMSPORT -- A year ago the King's College men's basketball team handed then-unbeaten Lycoming College its first loss of the season. On Sunday, the Monarchs were looking to perform a similar upset of a Warrior squad standing 8-1. Lycoming blew open a close game with a 13-4 run to start the second half and avoided a late King's rally as the Monarchs battled back from a 19-point deficit to fall 74-65 victory at Lamade Gym Sunday in Williamsport.
The first half went back-and-forth with six lead changes as the Warriors held a 30-28 lead with 3:52 on the clock. Lycoming, though, closed out the half with a 8-2 spurt to take a 38-30 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Warriors came out of the games and scored the first nine points to build a 47-30 lead following a driving lay-up by Justin Miller with 17:22 to play. The Monarchs used a three-pointer from Mike Foster and one-of-two foul shots by Ian Oakley to cut the lead to 49-34, but Lycoming countered with a 6-2 surge to take its biggest lead of the game at 19 points when a Michael Rudy bucket pushed the score to 55-36 with 14:05 remaining.
The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead but the Monarchs slowly chipped away and trimmed the score to 63-54 on a Tom Heston layup with 6:36 on the clock. Lycoming made one-of-two charity tossed to push the score to 64-54 at the 6:21 mark but the Monarchs battled back.
A driving lay-up by Kyle Hammonds and one-of-two foul shots from Joe Caffrey cut the lead to 64-57 with 5:01 to go. Following a Warrior miss from three-point range, the Monarchs used a pair of foul shots by Alex Cardoza and an inside basket from Heston to cut the lead to 64-61 with 3:54 remaining.
Lycoming, however, scored five straight points to bring the score to 69-61 with 2:48 left in the contest. Connor Hughes answered with a basket for King's to cut the score to 69-63 with 2:15 to go but failed to gain ground when Heston missed a pair of foul shots with 1:38 remaining.
With King's forced to foul, Lycoming made five-of-six attempts the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Hammonds led King's with 13 points and three assists while Heston added eight points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Foster added 11 points and five boards while Joe Caffrey and Foster contributed seven and six points respectively.
Lycoming was paced by Anthony with 16 points while Justin Miller followed with 14 points and eight rebounds. Williams chipped in with 10 points and 13 assists to aid the Warrior cause.
King's will be idle until December 29 when the Monarchs host Baldwin Wallace College of Ohio at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
