Lady Monarchs Suffer First Conference Loss to Misericordia 68-56

Dallas, PA -- Misericordia closed out the game with a 18-3 run to hand the King's College women's basketball team their first Freedom Conference loss of the season 68-56 Tuesday night at the Anderson Sports Center.

The loss snapped King's 13-game winning streak and dropped the Lady Monarchs to 20-4 overall and 12-1 in the Freedom Conference. The Cougars improved to 15-9 overall and 10-3 in the league.


The Lady Monarchs held a 53-50 edge with 4:54 to play after Katlin Michaels split a pair of free thows. The Cougars scored the next eight points including a 3-pointer by Tyann McDaniel that stretched the lead to 59-53. On the next possession Michaels scored a layup to cut the lead to four 59-55, but that was a close as the Lady Monarchs would get. 

With 10:22 on the clock the Cougars built their lead to 46-41 on a layup by Christine Marks. King's answered with an 11-2 run of its own behind 3-pointers on three straight possessions and five points from senior forward Samantha Simcox.

King's carried a 29-28 lead into the half and the team traded blows with four lead changes and four ties in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Hannah Seely hit a jumper with 14:33 to play in the first half to cut the King's lead to 9-8 and the Monarchs responded with a 11-3 run to build their largest lead of the game 20-11. Misericordia rallied back to cut the lead to one, 29-28, going into the locker room.

Senior Paige Carlin led the Monarchs in scoring with 15 points. Michaels also reached double figures in scoring with 11 points and also dished out seven assists. Simcox posted nine points and seven assists. Celia Rader chipped in nine points and a pair of steals.

Marks paced the Cougars offense with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Seely also totaled 17 points to go with five boards and three helpers. Jesse Robinson added 12 points and eight rebounds. McDaniel was the fourth Misericordia player to reach double figures with 11 points and added three dimes.

Misericordia controlled the game with its free throw shooting going 20-of-25 from the foul line. King's went 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Monarchs close out their regular season slate on Saturday when they make the short trip to take on cross-town rival Wilkes at 1:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
