MONARCH GRAPPLERS FALL TO 19TH RANKED WILKES IN DUAL MEET FINALE
WILKES-
BARRE -- The host Wilkes University wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts, picking up bonus points in five of the contests, as the 19th ranked Colonels posted a 32-14 over city rival King's Friday night in the Marts Center.
With the win, Wilkes improved to 19-4 on the year while King's ended its dual meet season with a 6-16 mark.
Wilkes jumped out to a 15-0 lead after three matches, using a technical fall from Mike Fleck at 125, a major decision by
Myzar Mendoza at 133, and a pin from Ryan Wilson at 141.
King's got on the board at 149-pounds when Chris
Mazzocchi (21-5) grinded out a 3-1 overtime win with a takedown to defeat John Lynch.
After King's was forced to forfeit at 157-pounds, the Colonels stretched the lead to 25-3 when Nate White posted a major decision at 165. Wilkes then added a hard-fought victory at 174 when Dustin Sough registered a 2-1 win over
Shane Stark (18-7) on the strength of a riding time point to up the lead to 28-3.
King's all-American
Mike Reilly, ranked eighth at 184-pounds, upped his season record to 25-2 with a dominating 18-2 technical fall victory over Buddy
Gougher, trimming he lead to 28-8. Wilkes, however, countered with a major decision at 197 to push the score at 32-8.
The Monarchs would win the final match when
Peter Dwyer (17-4) earned a third-period pin at heavyweight to set the final score at 32-14.
King's will be idle until February 26 when the Monarchs compete in the Metropolitan Wrestling Conference Championships at Elizabethtown College.
